Day 8 after Bone Marrow Transplant

Kate and I spent some time with Margaret tonight. For those of you who are checking the blog regularly day 8 represents a point in the post bone marrow transplant that is another victory for Margaret. As day 10 approaches please send Margaret all your positive thoughts, say only good things to each other and to Margaret and of course keep her and her family in your prayers.

Margaret's health challenges of breast cancer and leukemia have been serious business. But she did not lose her sense of humor.

Twice during the past year she has had to endure temporary hair loss due to chemotherapy. She was depressed each time, but then became determined to embrace what she could not change right away. Her sense of humor about her bare head has created a few private jokes and comparisons to famous people.

Put her in the comfortable knit cap that my mother made for her, and she resembles Radar O'Reilly from the TV show M.A.S.H.. In one of her head scarves, she looks like an actress from the Broadway musical "Fiddler on the Roof." I have said that she and former NBA player Charles Barkley share the same stylist. Margaret has said several times that she thinks she and Irish singer Sinead O'Conner look alike. In the photo attached with this post, she reminds me of the Tibetan Buddhist leader, the Dali Lama.

Someday we will look back on these photos and say, "Thank God those days are over!" Until then humor is a way to triumph over a cruel side effect that will eventually be overcome by Margaret anyway. I admire Margaret's bravado because it is not false. It is based on confidence, medical technology, faith, and determination.
